Jambay Lhakhang Drub Festival (The Naked Dance Festival)

The five-day Jambay Lhakhang Drub Festival is also popular as the Naked Dance Festival. It is held in Bumthang in central Bhutan. The main highlight and the attraction of the festival is a naked dance performed by naked male dancers around midnight under almost freezing conditions in November when the festival is held. There is also an elaborate fire ritual performed together with the dance.

The festival is held at the Jambay Lhakhang Monastery, which is one of the oldest monasteries in the country built in the 7th century. As such, this monastery/temple holds special significance in Bhutan and is considered one of the most important monuments in the country.

Bumthang is also the most beautiful district in Bhutan and is often referred to as the religious capital of Bhutan as it has several temples and monasteries. This district comprises four adjacent and beautiful valleys and the place is famous for several other religious festivals.

You can plan your trip to coincide with any of the festival in Bumthang and we would be happy to customize it for you together with a relaxed itinerary and short hikes and treks if you desire.
