Bhutan is a wildlife paradise and butterflies are no exception. Bhutan is ranked in the top 10 countries in terms of its species richness per unit area. And Bhutan is a country with strict conservation laws and plans to keep it that way with a constitution mandating that 60% of the country’s land area has to be under forest cover for all times.
While a detailed population census of butterfly has not been done, Bhutan is said to have more than 120 species including species like ‘Bhutan Glory’ and ‘Kaiser-I-Hind’, which are internationally protected by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species. Around 28 species of butterfly found in Bhutan are endemic to the eastern Himalayas
